This first extensive monograph on the outstanding miniature painter Jean-Baptiste Jacques Augustin presents a multi-faceted view of the artist. An account of his life is followed by chapters on his painting technique, his Paris studio with numerous students, his friends, his works (with comments) in the Salon exhibitions, and his entrepreneurial spirit. One chapter is dedicated to a number of artists from the painter’s family. The index of over 1,200 works indicates the extensive output of this great miniaturist. Many of his works are published here for the first time. The volume also contains a list of Augustin’s customers and another list with the names of his students.
The book is dedicated to Lieselotte Tansey in gratitude for her unique commitment to promoting the subject of European miniature painting.
