Hippopotamus amphibus – Hippopotamus
Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe
A large pod of hippos were in residence in Long Pool and I went to them one evening as the sun set. As I lay on the earth at the water’s edge, many of them gave warning yawns and argued with each other. This one slowly emerged from the water, staring straight at me. I thought it was going to charge, but it just continued looking grumpy.
